Casa Alianza Honduras update and funding appeal
The ongoing political instability continues to be of great concern and continues to place a considerable strain on our programme and resources.
International aid has been cut off, the banking system is under strain and people continue to stockpile food and essential supplies while prices soar.
There has been a national curfew, multiple demonstrations, hundreds of arrests and a great deal of political violence and human rights violations.
With nowhere to go and no immediate help, more and more homeless children and families are turning to Casa Alianza Honduras. Many are victims of attacks by demonstrators, police and military personnel; most are suffering the effects of tear gas and trauma.
At the main Casa Alianza programme, located in Tegucigalpa - several blocks away from the Presidential Palace, every day we care for around 200 homeless children between the ages of 12 and 15. Fortunately the compound is surrounded by a very large wall that keeps the children and staff safe but the numbers seeking our help increase daily.
The public education system is paralysed and children are unable to get to school, including Casa Alianza children. Thousands of people are unable to get to work and those who make a living on the streets as vendors, cleaners and drivers are unable to work and sustain their families.
Prices of food, utilities and supplies have dramatically increased on top of the prevailing economic crisis, making it increasingly difficult for Casa Alianza Honduras to function, and making life impossible for all except the elite who precipitated this crisis.
Life in Honduras for most people is at best one of basic subsistence, but the current political crisis has plunged the country into uncertainty, fear and insecurity, with the most vulnerable as always the most affected.
Casa Alianza Honduras continues to call upon those parties in conflict to find a peaceful resolution, to end the political crisis and return Honduras to a true and peaceful democracy, with respect for human rights and security. However, the reality is that we fear the situation will become worse before true democracy returns!
CASA UK RESPONSE
In October we transferred our funds earmarked for Honduras - £8,667 - directly to Casa Alianza Honduras in response to the crisis.
This included £3,1210 from Chilwell Road Methodist Church, Beeston, Nottinghamshire, for the family reintegration programme; £4,000 from the Suzanne Vega Benefit Concert and the balance from churches and individuals specifically wishing to support Honduras at this critical time.
Manuel Capellin, Director of Casa Alianza Honduras continues to stress that Honduras has for many years suffered poverty, violence and hardship, long before the current political crisis occurred. These are conditions that will exist long after this crisis is over.
