CAMPAIGN ACTION
URGE THE USA TO RATIFY THE UN CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD
BACKGROUND
During the presidential campaign in October 2008, President Obama was questioned about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and stated: “It’s important that the United States return to its position as a global leader and promoter of human rights. It is embarrassing to find ourselves in the company of Somalia, a lawless land. I will review this and other treaties and ensure that the United States resumes its global leadership in human rights.”
The UNCRC is 2O years old on 20th November and is almost universally ratified. Only Somalia and the USA have failed to ratify the Convention.
Casa Alianza UK is supporting Amnesty International UK’s Children Human Rights Network and asking our supporters and those concerned with children’s human rights to write to President Obama to remind him of his promise to review this treaty and ratify the UNCRC without further delay.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please write to President Obama (sample letter shown below), urging him to honour his promise to review and ratify the UNCRC without reservation or conditions that limit its provisions or application.

Dear President Obama,
I am writing to you from the United Kingdom as a supporter of Casa Alianza UK (known as Covenant House in the United States) to express my concern that the USA has still not ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
The CRC is 20 years old on November 20th this year, and to date all countries have ratified it with the exception of the United States and Somalia.
I respectfully request that you honour the promise you made during your presidential campaign in October 2008 to review and ratify the CRC and ensure that the United States resumes its global leadership in human rights.
I’m sure you would agree that no country can claim to be a champion of human rights without the ratification of core international treaties. 20 years is already too long a wait!
