Dear President
I am writing to express my deep concern about the appallingly high level of young people killed every month in Honduras, as well as the increasing level of violence against street children, and to ask what plans you intend to take to combat this serious problem
Casa Alianza has been recording the killings of young people in Honduras since 1998. The total at the end of December 2009 was a tragic 5,164 young people, lost in the most brutal circumstances imaginable.
I feel sure you’ll agree that no society can afford to lose its young people in this way and I call on you most respectfully to use your new position to:
Undertake a thorough investigation into the murders of these young people and prosecute those responsible
Adopt urgent measures to combat violence against street children and to respect and protect the rights of all children in Honduras, in keeping with the state’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
Adopt effective legislation to protect children from trafficking, sexual exploitation and abuse
Given that every day that passes, at least one more Honduran child will die, please do everything in your power to ensure that Honduras fulfils its obligation to provide adequate protection for children and young people, to give them the security to which they have a right.
